2013 Graduate College Prizes – Nominations Required for Graduating Seniors Who Will Begin Graduate Work in Summer or Fall 2013

Applications Due on March 8, 2013

Joseph E. and Ursil I. Callen Prize

The Graduate College is pleased to invite applications for the Joseph E. and Ursil I. Callen Prize. The award ($5000) is for an outstanding graduating senior in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Students must plan to attend graduate school at the University of Iowa or at any other university beginning the summer or fall of 2013. Candidates must be United States citizens who were born in the United States. In addition to strong academic qualifications, award recipients must show evidence of school and/or civic leadership in high school and/or college.
Applications should include the following:

  1. A statement, not to exceed one page, describing the student’s academic and life goals;
  2. A list of graduate programs to which the student has applied, or the name of the institution the student will attend, accompanied by documentation of admission into the program;
  3. A printout from ISIS of the student’s academic record at the University of Iowa;
  4. An activity list which includes the student’s research activities, notable extracurricular activities in both high school and college, and awards received;
  5. A brief statement describing leadership experiences;
  6. A letter of recommendation from a faculty member in the disciplinary area in which the student will pursue graduate work or in the student’s undergraduate major area.

The winner will be recognized at the 2013 Honors Award Ceremony.

Sanxay Prize

The Sanxay Prize is awarded annually to a University of Iowa liberal arts senior from Iowa who shows the highest promise of achievement in graduate work. Students must plan to enter a doctoral program in 2013. Graduates in December 2012, May and August 2013 are eligible for this award. Candidates must have been born in Iowa or be current permanent residents of Iowa. The prize, which carries a stipend of $1,000, may be used at the University of Iowa or at any other university in the United States or abroad.

In order to compete for the award, students must be nominated by their department. Either students or faculty can initiate the departmental nomination process. Departments can nominate up to two students.

Nominations should include the following:

  1. A letter from the nominating department which provides details concerning the student’s promise for outstanding graduate work;
  2. A brief statement by the student indicating his or her academic interests and plans including a list of doctoral programs to which the student has applied;
  3. A printout from ISIS of the student’s academic record at the University of Iowa;
  4. An activity list which includes the student’s research activities, notable extracurricular activities, and awards.
